Pocket Advent Devotions: Day 11 Prophet

Day 11 Prophet

Isaiah 9:6 A child will be born for us.A son will be given to us.The government will rest on his shoulders. He will be named:Wonderful Counselor,Mighty God,Everlasting Father,Prince of Peace.

More Reading: Isaiah 9:2-7

A Little Extra Thought:  A prophet did not mince words.  He said it the way it had to be heard.  Yet I find it interesting, that Isaiah uses a lot of law/gospel in his writing.  While he lays it out the way it needs to be heard, he wraps it up with God’s grace and promise.  A prophet’s job was to get the attention of the people.  How would you get the attention of the people around you?

Activity: Challenge your self and the kids to memorize this scripture verse today.

Matthew 1:25 He did not have marital relations with her before she gave birth to a son. Joseph named the child Jesus

More Reading: Matthew 1:18-25

A Little Extra Thought: In today’s standard’s some may not see this as a big deal.  Someone came and told Joseph that Mary was pregnant.  Joseph, thinking that Mary was a virgin, and Joseph being a good buy was just going to make this quietly go away. But as we all know, God had other plans.

Activity: The Birth of Jesus always brings up questions about sex for children.  What is a virgin?  How are babies made? Answer them as you see best.  Personally we use Concordia sex series book are amazing to help you teach “healthy” sex from a young age

Luke 2:1 At that time the Emperor Augustus ordered a census of the Roman Empire.

More Reading: Luke 2:1-3

A Little Extra Thought: Have you ever filled out a census?  It is pretty easy for us.  Fill in a few bubbles, write a few numbers and send it in.  It was not so east for Joseph and Mary.

Activity: Research what a census is and how it worked back in the day of Joseph and Mary and how it works today.

A Little Extra Thought: Where do I come from?  Having three adopted children I am very aware of that. They know us, but they wonder about their birth parents.  Many times we all wonder where did we come from?  I love the commercials for the websites that look up the history of people’s families.  It is fun to find out what your great grand parents did.  I explained to my kids that my history is their history.

Activity: Make a Family Tree.  Check out my Pinterest Board “Strong Families.”  I pin a lot of cool ideas to make some family tress.  Or take it a step future and research your family history.

Day 7 Name

Luke 1:60 His mother answered and said, “No; he shall be called John.”

More Reading: Luke 1:57-62

A Little Extra Thought: Naming a child is always an interesting process.  Some people know before the even become pregnant what their child’s name will be, others spend the whole nine months working on it.  Some are named after family.  Other’s are named from popular names.  Some are named from odd and strange reasons.

Activity: Look up the meaning of each persons name.  Take it step future and look up the meaning of your last name.  Look up the meaning of John and Jesus.

More Reading: Luke 1:46-56

A Little Extra Thought: Mary had a lot of unknown  at this point in her life.  She was adjusting to being pregnant.  She was adjusting to being pregnant with the Son of God.  She was adjusting to the life she knew change faster than she knew.  But instead of complaining, she took time to praise God.  How easy is it for us to complain about our situation instead of praising God.

Activity: Make a praise shakers our of recyclables in the kitchen.  Crank up the Christmas music and sing and dance. Come up with other ways to praise God.

Day 3 Kick

Luke 1:41 And it happened, when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, that the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.

More Reading: Luke 1:39-45

A Little Extra Thought: I was teaching confirmation tonight and when I asked what did baby Jesus do when Mary met Elizabeth.  One of my kids jumped up and said “He kicked Mary and didn’t he leap too! ”  I am not sure that was what Mary felt, but maybe it was.  It is an amazing feeling a baby kick from the inside!  It is also fun to feel a baby kick while putting your hand on the belly of a pregnant women.

Activity: Talk about what it was like to have a baby kicking you inside you or ask some who is pregnant what it feels like.  Look up Youtube videos of baby’s moving in the belly.  ASK…ask if you can feel a baby kick if you know some one who is pregnant.

Extra: Watch The Nativity Story

A Little Extra Thought: I remember the first time I felt Robby move inside me. It was an amazing feeling. While being pregnant was not all that glorious and I was tired and sick the whole time…feeling Robby move was amazing.

Activity: Talk about what a pregnant belly looks like. Look up a picture of a baby growing inside a womb. Pull our ultra sound pictures or look up on the internet week by week pictures. (face it, talking about the Christmas Story is a great opening to a healthy “sex” talk with children.)

A Little Extra Thought: I feel that music is very powerful.  Christmas is special time for music.  From classic carols to hymns to new contemporary Christmas songs, it helps us all celebrate and worship.  Sometimes my thoughts come to me through a song, and today through a Hymn: The Angel Gabriel From Heaven Came….

Activity: Look up the word favored and talk about what it means.

Day 2 Waiting

Luke 1:19-20: “The angel answered him, “I’m Gabriel! I stand in God’s presence. God sent me to tell you this good news.  But because you didn’t believe what I said, you will be unable to talk until the day this happens. Everything will come true at the right time.”

A Little Extra Thought: Zechariah needed proof of what he was being told!  How often do we need proof of God in today’s world.   So God gave Zechariah proof, just not the proof he was looking for.  Now he had to wait and he had to do with out being able to talk!  What would God need to do you to give you proof?

Activity: Talk about a time when you had to wait. How did you feel?
