Pocket Advent Devotional: Day 6 Praise

Day 6 Praise

Luke 1:46 And Mary said: “My soul magnifies the Lord,

More Reading: Luke 1:46-56

A Little Extra Thought: Mary had a lot of unknown  at this point in her life.  She was adjusting to being pregnant.  She was adjusting to being pregnant with the Son of God.  She was adjusting to the life she knew change faster than she knew.  But instead of complaining, she took time to praise God.  How easy is it for us to complain about our situation instead of praising God.

Activity: Make a praise shakers our of recyclables in the kitchen.  Crank up the Christmas music and sing and dance. Come up with other ways to praise God.

Grapevine Studies: Birth of Jesus {Curriculum Review}

This is not my first time using Grapevine Studies.  Our family is hooked….just not on God’s Word, but stick figures and making it come alive!  And when I told them we were going to do a short study on the birth of Jesus they were all for it.  This Study on the Birth of Jesus is perfect for homeschool and for church.  I use Grapevine Studies both for our homeschool studies and for our confirmation class at church where I teach.

Grapevine Studies writes: “Students will begin in Nazareth with the angel’s announcement to Mary. Then they will follow along as Jesus and His family escape from Herod by fleeing to Egypt, and later as they return to Nazareth after Herod’s death. “

How I used it at home

I have three younger children 11, 6 and 5.  To be honest my 5 year old last about 10 minutes into the study and is done. For my sanity I let him go.  He listens but doesn’t draw.

We use the bible study pages.  We go over the terms or look them up in the bible dictionary.  (By the way…story of the Birth of Jesus is a great time to bring up a few lessons on sex…just saying.)  Then we go through the stories, my oldest reads the bible passages and I draw.  This time around I could not find my white board markers or the colored pencils….they are together somewhere….so they used crayons and I used white board crayons….not advisable!

As we went through our lesson my kids would come up with other questions so we would stop and look those up.  Love Google.

What I love about Grapevine Studies

  • is you can get this study for the ages you need or Multi level like we did.
  • You can order a hard copy or e-book…personally I received an ebook for both, but I have come to realize that it may be better to order student books and teacher ebooks.  E-books though you print out what you want to do.
  • Easy to follow teachers guide.
  • These lessons are so simple and easy -perfect for any church to keep on hand for Sunday school, midweek, confirmation, adult classes, a great review for anytime.
  • I mentioned this in my other review, this is easy for kids with learning disabilities to learn the bible.

Grapevine Studies Birth of Jesus

Tonight we had Advent service, my six year old drew about 20 pictures of Mary and Joseph and baby Jesus, but she decided that Mary needed a dress.  I noticed the angels have wings.  My 11 year old always draws stick figures in church, but it wasn’t bible related…now some of the stick figures are.

How I use it with my confirmation class…

I had been using the Old Testament Timeline in our confirmation class at church.  We ended last week…with those eyes looking toward the savior…so out of this lesson I used the timelines, to continue the format we were using.  We are trying to figure out how to use my iPad connect to the TV and draw on the TV…the connection is still being worked on.  Till then I use newsprint and markers.  Good thing about using newsprint and you move you paper to another spot in the room and people try to figure what on earth you are doing in confirmation!

Ironic thing about class tonight was 2/3 of my class was out due to sickness.  I only have 9 in class-6 girls and 3 boys.  Class was 2 boys and 1 girl tonight….boys where happy to have control of class!  But in the middle we stopped and had a discussion on how far did Mary and Joseph walk when they went to Bethlehem (80 miles…google!) and how long did it take!

Disclaimer: I received a copy of Birth of Jesus ebook free of charge in exchange for an honest review.

Pocket Advent Devotions: Day 5 Kick

;

Day 3 Kick

Luke 1:41 And it happened, when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, that the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.

More Reading: Luke 1:39-45

A Little Extra Thought: I was teaching confirmation tonight and when I asked what did baby Jesus do when Mary met Elizabeth.  One of my kids jumped up and said “He kicked Mary and didn’t he leap too! ”  I am not sure that was what Mary felt, but maybe it was.  It is an amazing feeling a baby kick from the inside!  It is also fun to feel a baby kick while putting your hand on the belly of a pregnant women.

Activity: Talk about what it was like to have a baby kicking you inside you or ask some who is pregnant what it feels like.  Look up Youtube videos of baby’s moving in the belly.  ASK…ask if you can feel a baby kick if you know some one who is pregnant.

Extra: Watch The Nativity Story

Day 3 Pregnant

Luke 1:31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus.

More Reading: Luke 1:30-33

A Little Extra Thought: I remember the first time I felt Robby move inside me. It was an amazing feeling. While being pregnant was not all that glorious and I was tired and sick the whole time…feeling Robby move was amazing.

Activity: Talk about what a pregnant belly looks like. Look up a picture of a baby growing inside a womb. Pull our ultra sound pictures or look up on the internet week by week pictures. (face it, talking about the Christmas Story is a great opening to a healthy “sex” talk with children.)

Luke 1:28 And having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!”

More Reading:  Luke 1:26-29

A Little Extra Thought: I feel that music is very powerful.  Christmas is special time for music.  From classic carols to hymns to new contemporary Christmas songs, it helps us all celebrate and worship.  Sometimes my thoughts come to me through a song, and today through a Hymn: The Angel Gabriel From Heaven Came….

Activity: Look up the word favored and talk about what it means.

Pocket Advent Devotions: Day 2 Waiting

Day 2 Waiting

Luke 1:19-20: “The angel answered him, “I’m Gabriel! I stand in God’s presence. God sent me to tell you this good news.  But because you didn’t believe what I said, you will be unable to talk until the day this happens. Everything will come true at the right time.”

More Reading:  Luke 1:18-23

A Little Extra Thought: Zechariah needed proof of what he was being told!  How often do we need proof of God in today’s world.   So God gave Zechariah proof, just not the proof he was looking for.  Now he had to wait and he had to do with out being able to talk!  What would God need to do you to give you proof?

Activity: Talk about a time when you had to wait. How did you feel?

Pocket Advent Devotions: Day 1 Angels

I wrote this little set of devotions about 5 years ago, printed them out on business cards and put them on a key ring.  I did this as an invitation to our church for Advent and Christmas services.

Pocket Advent Devotions

Inside it said “This little devotional is small and can fit into a pocket, a purse, a backpack, or even a cup holder in the car.  It is designed to give you and your family a journey to the manger by focusing on the Christmas story Scripture and some prophesies that foretold the coming of Christ.  that is what advent is all about.  simply the coming of christ.

With small children, read the scripture and do the activity.  Older children can read the “more Reading” from the bible.  As you get closer to christmas you read the christmas story over and over.  The goal is to memorize the story.  Make the activities as simple or as complex as you like.  Most important, have fun as you spend time with your family this Advent season.”

With the use of iPhones and other smart phones, this “pocket devotion” can take on a different life…

Day 1: Angels

Luke 1:13 “But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.”

More reading Luke 1:1-17

A little Extra Thought: Angels play an important role in the story of  the birth of Christ.  Try to think of stories that Angels appear in. What do they do and say? Do you remember any of their names?

Activity: Find pictures of Angels

Here is one I found today at our Church

On the 3rd-9th days of Advent

LOL what happened? (Besides not blogging!:)) Lots!   We got our Christmas tree up, my fireplace is decorated (see where I sunk in advent?)  We have sung lots of Christmas songs, worked on christmas cards and done a lot of cleaning up. And I have spent way too much time on Pinterest!  Wow, the ideas are amazing….now to start putting some together!  I have the ribbon ready for a Christmas tree for AnnieQ.  I had the ribbon, just need a simple shirt.   used one of the ideas for hanging my stockings.  My kids are painting their own manger scenes.  Robby has an Lego advent calendar (Yes I broke) and the two little ones Advent manger stickers.  We also have the big new one with the different pieces.  We have been watching Christmas movies and reading our books.  We have not our advent candles yet to light, I finally have my wreath, just have to get my candles.

I think we are on a good path toward celebrating the birth of Christ….but I have soooo much more to do!  This has been the first Christmas I have been really into and my sister and brother in law are coming for Christmas morning, which is the first time I have woken up with my family on Christmas in a long time!
So onward we go!

On the Third Day of Advent

On the third day of Advent we listened to lots and lots of Christmas music! And I did some Christmas shopping. Robby built his annual Lego Manger scene.

I am also trying to do some one on one time with each kid. Today was Isaiah time. Yesterday I spent with AnQuenette.

And as I was cleaning I found this activity book!! Wahoo…I always found it after Christmas!! So I look forward to going through it!

Our night time book was this little one. I don’t remember where I got it from!
